I was watching TV when a commercial came on about varicose vein treatment. It promised relief from pressure and discomfort—and I’ll admit, it caught my attention. But instead of just being sold on the solution, I got curious. I asked myself: is this just another band-aid?
So, I did some digging. I looked up the causes of varicose veins. And what I found was telling: many cases are connected to high blood pressure, poor blood flow, and yes, weak leg muscles—especially the calves.
They call your calves your “second heart” for a reason. Those muscles are designed to help pump blood back up to the heart. But what happens when they’re weak from inactivity? Circulation slows. Blood pools. And those veins start to bulge.
Here’s the truth: in a lot of cases, varicose veins aren’t just a vein issue. They’re a leg issue. And deeper than that? They’re a habit issue.
We sit too long. We skip movement. We take the elevator when we could take the stairs. We park close instead of giving our legs a chance to do what they were made for—move.
Now, I’m not anti-treatment. If someone needs a medical procedure, they should do what’s best for them. But don’t let that be your only solution. Fix the habit, not just the symptom.
So how do we start?
Walk more. 10,000 steps isn’t just a trend—it’s medicine.
Take the stairs. Skip the elevator.
Park far and walk.
Stand up and stretch every hour.
Add calf raises, walking, jumping rope, or cycling to your routine.
If the legs are strong, the veins have support. If the habits are strong, the body has a chance.
So today, let’s not just put a needle to the vein. Let’s put a needle to the habit. Let’s get up, get moving, and take care of this body the way we were designed to.
